The Printed Image in China Talk with Clarissa von Spee Wednesday 28 July, 18.45

The Printed Image in China from the 8th to the 21st Centuries presents for the first time the entire range of Chinese prints at the British Museum. Exhibition curator Clarissa von Spee narrates the history of printing and papermaking, invented in China centuries before it was known in Europe. Works discussed include Buddhist prints from the Silk Road, colourful images used in folk rituals and festivals, impressive imperial engravings, stunning anti-war images of the Modern Woodcut Movement and contemporary prints that gained recognition in the international art scene, as well as the oldest printed book in the world – the Diamond Sutra from 868 AD.

Clarissa von Spee is a curator of the Chinese and Central Asian collections at the British Museum, and of the current exhibition The Printed Image in China from the 8th to the 21st Centuries.
