[09-Sep-2011] Atsuko Tanaka and Japanese Women Artists in the Context of Conceptualism 1950 - 2010
Atsuko Tanaka was one of the foremost members of Gutai, a group which focussed on experimental art forms, their manifesto proclaiming a new relationship between the materials and the human spirit. Within this primarily male-orientated group, Tanaka was particularly unconventional and stood out from the other Gutai members, as indeed she did from other international avant-garde artists of her time. This was due not only to her radical and metaphorical expression, but also the relationship between the body of work created especially between 1953 and 1957, and her way of thinking.More...

Life Friendly Residency with Yan Preston
Life Friendly Residency with Yan Preston25 July – 6 August
Open Studio: 5 & 6 August
Late Night Opening with the Artist: 5 August, 5pm - 7:30pm
Plus Life Friendly Events throughout the Summer
Chinese Arts Centre is delighted to announce the experimental ‘Life Friendly Project’ in collaboration with research consultancy Culture Probe, this summer. The Life Friendly Project attempts to explore how artists and art organisations can work in ways that have a positive (benign / restorative) impact on both human quality of life and on the natural world. This approach is in radical contrast to the low carbon economy eco-efficiency approach, which focuses on reducing negative impact. There is considerable evidence that eco-efficiency does not solve the climate change problem but only slows it down, and has other unintended negative consequences.

Leaving My Found Eden: A Poetography Exhibit
From July 20th through August 7th, I will be having an art show at the Lewisham Arthouse Gallery in the Lewisham area of London. The show is titled “Leaving My Found Eden: A Poetography Exhibit.” It features the art form I call Poetography, in which I combine English-language tanka poetry with black-and-white photography. The theme of the show focuses on the sadness of leaving the person and place you love. All the proceeds from the sales of the art will be donated to local non-profit organizations.
I also looking for some organizations I would like to support. I would like to dedicate one or more nights to your organization if you are willing to help get people to the gallery. The best way, I think, is to have one or two of your performers do read my poems. Having a professional read the poems would be much better than if I were to read them.

Working with British East Asian communities talk at the Platform for Intercultural Europe
Creative Director of Chinatown Arts Space, David Tse is to give a talk at Rose Bruford College Wednesday, 15 Dec 11.15am, about Working with British East Asian communities as part of the Platform for Intercultural Europe. The programme is scheduled 15-16 December.
Britain is often viewed as being particularly progressive among European countries in terms of its policies and practice around ethnic and cultural diversity. But the current economic crisis has created a climate where anti-immigration attitudes affect the treatment of British citizens of foreign descent, and severe cuts in public spending are likely to hamper work for community cohesion and integration. The close of 2010 is therefore a particularly appropriate moment for the Platform for Intercultural Europe to mount the first of its Intercultural Practice Exchanges in the UK, building on previous work in Sweden, Austria and Italy.

I Value the Arts: Urgent appeal from Kate Adie
As you may know, the recent Comprehensive Spending Review left local councils facing an average cut of 28 per cent. The non-statutory status of local funding for cultural services has meant that the arts sector is left vulnerable to bear the brunt of these local authority cuts.
