The Korean Film Night: Year of the 12 Directors
2012 Korean Film Night is proud to present the work of 12 of Korea’s leading Directors with a dynamic selection of weekly screenings throughout the year.
January’s mini-season features the films of Director LEE Myung-se who will be joining us for a special Q&A screening of his 2005 film ‘Duelist’.

‘The Korean Film Night: Year of the 12 Directors’ has four screenings per month (three at the KCCUK and a 4th Special Screening at the Apollo Cinema, Piccadilly).
We will also see 12 of Korea’s leading film Director’s join us for the final screening of their monthly Showcase. Each Director has kindly agreed to lead a Q&A Session after the special screening at the Apollo Cinema. 2012 is your chance to sample the works of some great Directors before meeting them in person at the Special Screening.
Our aim is to bring a broad spectrum of Korean Cinema to British audiences and to also provide an opportunity to interact with Korean directors who work with various cinematic genres, from art-house to commercial, classic and also independent cinema.
With such a programme of films, the ‘Year of the 12 Directors’ offers you a wonderful opportunity to discover the gems of Korean cinema.
1. Lee Myung-se is a prolific filmmaker and writer, despite wide distribution of his work, is still little known in the UK. Lee Myung-se is one of a few directors who are popular with both audiences and critics. His films are well known for their unique and innovative style and also beautiful cinematography. His fantastic mise-en-scene has an understanding on life and reality as a prerequisite.
2. The Duelist, 2005, 111min, Cert. 12 (Genre: Epic/Action)
In the late Chosun Dynasty, counterfeit money was being circulated. Detective Ahn of the Left Security Station and a passionate newcomer, Nam-sun try to trace the source of the counterfeiting. They chase the Secretary of National Security and his man ‘Sad Eye’ as suspects. A predestined battle between the best female detective in Chosun, Nam-sun, and a mysterious assassin ‘Sad Eye’ duly unfolds. The Duelist is a magnificent, chivalric film that showcases Lee’s style.
